Determining Topics and Your Academic Question

Directions: Because a researched argument can be complex, and you will establish an academic question and a topic before you begin exploring the (hopefully) vast amounts of information available to you.

First, choose three topics from your free write.

Second, answer 2.5 on page 34-35 of the LBH and choose 2-3 questions to answer for each prospective topic in order to determine an academic question.

Last, read the LBH 14-16 and answer 1.5 on page 17 of the LBH in order to revise and specify your topic.

Blog post due before 5pm on Friday, July 11th.

Reply to classmate: comment on one of your peers' academic question. Is it broad enough to generate curiosity about the topic? Is it specific enough to narrow down the topic to something that can be written about in 900-1200 words? Please let your classmate know why you think it is a good question, or a question that needs work. If the question needs work, please offer one piece of constructive criticism. Remember the titanium rule!

Blog reply due before 5pm on Sunday, July 13th.

  1. uclear power is it negative misconception.
It is more powerful then coal cleaner then natural gas, and is less dangerous then oil
It has less unusable waste than any other type of power generation.
And because of possible problems it has innumerable safety measures.
But it has a bad rep because of its power.
    Cloning and artificial life
    Its morally confusing playing god
    Could it replace natural breeding,
    How it could advance science.
    Industrial animal raising
    Is it humane?
    Can it cause other problems?
Is it more or less effective than free-range animal farms.

    1. Corwin,
I personally like the idea of you wanting to research Industrial Animal Raising and if this can cause other problems. But, what kind of problems are you talking about? Issues with how animals are raised, health problems from human consumption, or even the financial issue with this process?

  2. My three topic that I am anticipating writing about are: “Coping With Stress”, “Issues With Sleep”, and “Should Parents Be Responsible For The Actions of Their Children and What Age Should Children Take Responsibility For Their Own Actions”.

    Coping With Stress
    1) What causes stress?
    2) Are there certain professions that involve a higher stress level than others?
    3) What are proven ways of relieving stress?

    Issues With Sleep
    1) Why might a person have problems with sleep?
    2) Can these problems be health related?
    3) What are three ways to improve sleep?

Should Parents Be Responsible For The Actions of Their Children?
    1) What effects do the media have whether or not parents should or should not take responsibility for their children’s actions?
    2) When should children become responsible for their own actions?
    3) Should there be stipulations for when children should have to be responsible for their actions regardless?

The three ending topics for my paper are: “Are there certain professions that involve a higher stress level than others”, “Can issues with sleep be health related”, “At what age should parents stop taking responsibility for their children’s actions”.

    1. I think your topic coping with stress might be better if you narrow it down a little more. Not all kinds of stress are the same, like some professions might put metal stress on you while others cause emotional stress or physical stress, and some jobs involve all three. I think by narrowing it down to what kind of stress you want to cover will make that topic not only more interesting, but easier for you to cover in 3-4 pages. I think your other two topics are pretty sound they way they are.

    2. Hey Jeffrey,
Thank you for your response, I did not even think about that so that's a good thing to point out. I'm not sure which brain I would refer too, that would make it a bit more difficult to research. I have since been thinking about a different topic.

      Thank you!

  5. My three topics of choice are: a gas station on the moon, internet neutrality/ freedom of speech on the net, and effects of DNA manipulation tech on the greater good.
Use of moons hydrogen as a private gas station
How did it happen? Travel to the moon has been restricted due to weight of gas, something like 95% of a rocket’s mass is in propulsion weight. This is a possible answer to the problem.
    What is it?
Includes: It is a privatized gas station on the moon for refilling propulsion and ensuring the least rocket fuel for travel
It excludes: government controlled gas station.
How is it different from other things? Different by price and sheer weight requirements for travel to the moon. Enables a much broader range of access to the moon, yet carries a huge risk if something goes wrong before reaching the moon.
    Cause and effect analysis.
Effect of privatization would be one company monopolization, which company? Who has rights to build disputes of who can claim the land yet greater private control and greater private access
Effect of governmental would be arguments between government. Who has the right to control it?
    Internet neutrality
Effect of neutrality? Freedom of speech, greater propogation of world knowledge, greater unrest among people in unfair governmental structures, revolt of the people
Examples? Examples of revolt among a people who have new knowledge, effectiveness of control on people through control of knowledge.
    It tastes like lamp
Why did it happen and what results? Any examples of revolt due to knowledge, or war due to repression of knowledge.
Effects of biological dna manipulation for greater good?
What has been a benefit? Tailoring of bacteria to fight disease, possible reductions in genetic deformities, manipulating life for the betterment of all.
What has been a downside? Tailoring of biological warfare, creating new and horrible genetic deformities. “manipulation of life is the sole domain of god” ..religion.

    Moon’s gas station
Reduction in gas needed therefore reduction in price
Actual math of it, weight, costs, reduction in price
Is it ethical to send a person to the moon on a one way ticket?
Any examples of malfunctions prior to the moon, malfunctions of similar one way trips and how it went horribly wrong, stability of technology both on ship and on moon
    It should be private
Examples of private sector mining being helpful, costs/reduction of private costs, available to all governments, private sector disputes examples of them turning horrible
    It should be governmental
Great benefit to that government through earned money, new land, new options for the moon, any examples of governmental control being for the “greater good”

    1. Hi Zach,

The topic you've selected is something I've never heard of and it sounds interesting. I like how narrow you've made the topic; you seem to have a lot of significant questions to ask and answer. That being said, since this paper has an element of persuasion, what would you be persuading your audience of? This factor was a bit unclear to me. Otherwise, great start!

      Thank you,

    2. Video Games in Culture
Does video games cause social circles or groups by classification of what you play?
Are Video games brining groups together in a defined environment they already know?
Can video games lead to a decline in social activities outside the house, or can they bring people together in more ways than standard ideas of educating about a group?
    3. Legos played with at older age
Is there a social stigma to playing with Legos outside of recommended ages?
Could playing with Legos be a form of therapy or a hobby used to reduce stress or create an escape?
Why do people of older age play with a child’s toy, does the media AKA Movies, games, and Commercials have an impact? Or does it stem from an idea of childhood or having children to find a norm that is acceptable?

Maybe change that question from Longer life to a Healthier life? As for Civil Disobedience, just be careful were you look for that.

    1. Jeffrey,
I would like to focus on your topic of thinking better.

It certainly is broad enough to generate curiosity.

Is it specific enough to narrow down to 1200 words? I am not so sure on this.

It is both a really good subject and not so good in my opinion. The subject itself is one I am personally very curious about. Though I would be wary of how broad the subject could be. I know that if I attempted this, I could literally write for the rest of my life on the subject. Even just narrowing it down to what is better when it comes to thinking could be too broad. Certainly there will have to be a definition of "better" within the paper to make sense. If I were doing this subject I would just try to narrow it down to as specific as possible. For instance the question of does college help improve a person's thinking can have sub-subjects of dicipline gained through academics, broadening perspectives through encountering different perspectives in school and learning speed with accuracy through heavy course loads. Even those mini subjects could fill a paper, each with a positive and a negative. Good luck! Im curious how it could be done.
ps. I laughed at "Is it possible to write a three page essay without revision?" well, yes but any time I attempt it, it comes out HORRIBLE!

Both could potentially go well above the word limit. Though your specific questions are very good. I think with those you can easily narrow the topic down within 1200 words.
