Reading Like an Academic

Directions: Summarize your experience with the three-read process of the Anne Lamott text (not what you learned, but how the process helped you read this text, and might help you read other texts in the future). If the process did not help your comprehension of the Lamott text, please state so, but summarize why you did not benefit from this method of reading and what you might do in the future to help with text comprehension. The post should not state emotion or opinion about either the text or the three-read process, but should, instead, concentrate on explaining the experience objectively. Your reply should be no longer than 200 words. (Due before class on June 4th.)

Reply: Comment on a classmate's ability to relate his/her experience in the fashion of a summary. If you believe s/he wrote more of a narrative/analysis than a summary, make one suggestion for what s/he might do for his/her summary for the Davidson text. Your response needs to be at least three sentences long, and must contain constructive criticism. (Due before 5pm on June 8th)

Stay professional with your posts. Also, remember that this is a community forum. Take what your classmates say with a grain of salt, but also take advantage of the crowd-sourcing.

  1. Being someone that has never used the three read process, I found it helpful. There have been classes where reading is a big part and it’s a bit difficult to read and comprehend, alas, this is what I always try to do.
The three read process is designed to help someone read and understand an article without actually “reading” an article. After skimming the first time, I had a really basic idea about what the topic of the article was, so I could infer what she (Lamott) was going to talk about. After having the basic idea of the article, I went about reading it thoroughly which helped me iron out the wrinkles and get an even better understanding. Then I digested the article, figured out what I liked about it or what I didn’t. The three read process gives you a good grasp on the article. For some this process may be effective, for others it may be more work than just reading something the first time. It all depends on the person.

    2. Evan,
I also found that the three read process was more work than I am use to. On the other hand I did find it to be beneficial by allowing me to know more about what I am going to read at a quick glance and maybe then having a chance to connect with the text. I, myself would not use this technique for my own reading even though I have tons of reading to do weekly. With all of this in mind, I had no issue understanding what you were telling us (your audience) in your blog entry and I wasn't able to find a flaw in your grammar.

  2. Trying the three-read process again has not yet convinced me, yes it was helpful but very time consuming to some point. I have tried this method before and did not like it the last time. I can still try to consider the process because it’s basically a resource that would help me achieve better reading, writing, and comprehension skills. I like this method to some extent, because it helps gather information one might have missed, when reading the article for the first time. You can only retain so much information before forgetting what you just read 7 pages ago and also helps comprehend what the writer’s main idea is. I like the idea of skimming the article to get the main feel of it and then actually reading it to get the actual details of the main idea. Lastly I like the idea of having your own notes to go back on, to not have to return to the article for information you might have to provide. I like that it helps smooth out any questions one might have about the article and simply understanding the piece. All in all I like the way it’s simple and to the point as far as directions on the process but I don’t like the way it’s a little time consuming and almost feels excessive.

    1. I really like how you had a strong stance on the topic of the three-process reading, but I just think it was a little opinionated. By this I mean you focused a hair too much on what you liked and didn't like that I never really found out how your experience was with the reading. Yet, since I can see you have a very strong stance on the process I can tell that if you were to take a little of the "I like" and "I didn't like" out of the piece you would have a great summary of your experience.

    2. I understand what your saying Drew, I kind of just skimmed through the directions. I wonder If I'm allowed to take it back and re-write it the right way.?

  3. My experience with the three-read process of the Lamott text was one of analysis and critical thinking. The three-read process allowed the reader to first skim the Lamott text in order to get the main gist of the essay, then read the text in order to be provided with the main points and lastly allowed the audience to digest the piece and create their opinion on it. This aided me greatly in both my understanding and my analysis of the text since I was allowed to get the generic concept of the text in the first reading and expand my knowledge and really create an understanding of the text with my second reading. I will definitely take away from this three-read process and transfer it into all other literature I wish to analyze and understand because it allowed me, and the rest of the audience, to engage in both critical thinking of the literature as well as thoroughly understand what is being read. To put it into our wine tasting metaphor, this process allowed me to observe, taste and enjoy the aftertastes which is what reading and analysis is all about.

    1. I thought you demonstrated a firm understanding of the subject material. It is clear that you put thought into the reading, but I wish you would have said what exactly you took away from the text after you said "I will definitely take away..." As a reader I was expecting something specific, but overall I enjoyed reading your thoughts.

  4. I often find myself skimming majority of the material that I read, both in school and on my own time. It is for this exact reason that I found the three read process particularly applicable and helpful.
However, when I skim, I usually just cover the main text, and pay little mind to titles, subtitles, pictures, etc. That being said, actually slowing down and paying attention to those details helps immensely in getting a general idea about what I’m preparing to read. Actually jumping into the text and reading it thoroughly while questioning who the audience is, what the thesis may be, and who is being cited extends my comprehension of the material, and keeps my attention, so that I’m not simply reciting the words that are on the paper without really processing them. Analyzing the material after skimming and thoroughly reading it certainly helps me retain the information and the purpose behind what I read so that I may form my own opinions. This method may not be helpful to everyone, but I would encourage any reader to at least give it a try, as it could be potentially beneficial to their learning experience.

    1. Loni,

I believe you covered the three- read process well. You did not try to persuade anyone to use this process. You did exactly what the instructions told us to do; "summarize your experience with the three- read process." very well.

    2. I think you did a great job of putting your personal habits in relation to the three read process without inserting much of your own opinion. As Dana pointed out, this is a summary project not a persuasive argument. I wish you had actually laid out what the process is for someone who had not read the same piece, but you were still concise and to the point.

  5. Up until June 2, 2014 I had never heard of the three-read process. By using this process I was able to better understand what Lamott was saying and the urgency behind what she was writing in her piece “Shitty First Drafts”. The first read of the article offered a basic understanding of what I was reading. While the first read gave me a idea of what the text consisted of, the second read allowed me to look closer at what the article’s text says, better understand the author’s main point, and even who the author was targeting as their audience. Following the third read I was able to put together all the details from the article and to establish my own opinion of what the author was stating during their work.

    1. From the way it sounds, it seems that you enjoyed the three read process! I like that you didn't put your opinion directly in your post, but your tone of voice showed how you felt... Nicely done. At points, your post can be a bit wordy, which isn't a bad thing. Next time see if you can find sentences where you can extract words while the sentence still makes sense.

  6. The three-read process is great way to understand and analyze the text. In the first reading you are to grab as much information from the text as you can from skimming thetext. The second read is where you go into depth and interact with the text, and in the third read you analyze the text.

Purely looking at the title, abstract, first and last paragraph, and the author description helped me generalize what the text was about, who was the targeted audience, the author’s background, and the ideal flow of the text.

The second read is all about interacting with the text as well as reading the entire passage. In this step the three-read process I marked important parts of the text as well as the supporting arguments to the main points.

In the third read you looked back at the text and ask the questions: who is the intended audience, and do you agree or disagree with the passage and why do you think so. These questions help with analyzing the text.

I think that the three-read process will help me analyze and interact with the text. It allows you to break down the text better and gives you a better idea what to look for in the passage. This will help guide your reading for understanding the points the author is trying to make. Overall I think this is a good process to aid in your understanding and analysis of the text.

    1. I like how thorough you are with explaining the steps of how to three-read process works, however I think if you had focused a little more on how the process actually impacted your learning (whether helpful or non helpful), and if it made a difference in the way you read the essay or not, it would have fit the prompt a little better. Again, I like how thorough you are, but you come off a little off topic from the prompt given.

  7. The 3 read process is useful but not in all cases. The process is useful for longer reads over the shorter ones. So it has its places where it is very useful. The 3 read processes is useful to help students who have trouble with understanding texts. But as was stated earlier it is not as useful on texts that are easily read or are very short because it is a skimming process it may not be as useful as just reading the whole thing through. So the 3 reading process is useful in certain circumstances but not in all.

    1. I agree that there are certain situations when the process wouldn't always be beneficial. However, I would have liked to know if the process was beneficial to you in particular. Maybe you could go through the steps in order, explain what you did, and if that step was helpful/how it was helpful to help organize your ideas?

    2. I like how you phase this blog without using the word "I." I believe you give your opinion in a summary when you use the word "I" even though what you did was factual. Using your last name is awkward unless use in a biography.

    3. I absolutely agree that the three read process is useful in some but not all cases. I found that it could be useful especially when I don't much like the text. It gives me a framework to make sure i don't miss anything. though I think it is more useful than you give it credit for, your focus is on the skimming part but that is only the first of the three readings. The rest are more in depth.

  8. The three-read process shows oneself how to annotate a piece of writing. First process looks at the information in the title of the writing, the author, the abstract, and the information about the author. Second process observes the messages of the writing, thesis, and audience. Last process requires oneself to think about and analyze the writing piece.

    1. Your explanation of how the three-read process is good, however that's not what the blog prompt was. The prompt was asking you how the process either helped you with your understanding of the Lamott essay or how it didn't help you. It feels a little impersonal to write how it affected you as a summary because you aren't stating what you did or didn't like about the process, but adding in more about how it directly affected your understanding of the essay will put you back on track towards answering the prompt.

Look at a book or report as you would wine, notice the cover coloration of what it might hold inside it pages. Smell the parts of interest to get an idea to go along with the pre conceived imagery in your mind. This is one of the three points of skimming over a written work. Tasting the article or story is the second point, diving deeper into the pages to get better details to what and why. The third is aftertaste of what you read; does it leave a tart taste in your mouth like a wine or leave you wanting more? This was of teaching goes hand in hand with most college reading and study. I did not agree to this method of reading, to many plot points were left out during my first skim leaving me to make a different conclusion of the written work by Anne Lamott. Only during my second reading of the work I got a better understanding. I will not use this method as I would not benefit from skimming over important details that I would need. In future works I will read the full work highlighting import parts, details, or obscure analogy’s to go back later on skimming over what was read to find the subject material. In short, keep the cheese I’ll take a beer.

    1. It is good that you got the main point of the article. The three-read process proposes an alternative way of reading before you read. Image if you need to read many pages, "I have to read 200 pages at the end of the week in my master series, " said Ms. Taylor.

  11. I used the three read process to read the Anne Lammott text Shitty First Drafts. I can see how this type of reading can be very beneficial to most people. However, I prefer to fully read it first, then go back and skim it and pick out things I found to be important. If I skim first I don’t know what I am looking for, so I do not know what to underline or highlight. So, in a way I do use the three method in my writing just not in the right order. I have just always found it easier to read straight through the text, then go back and underline things.

    2. I particularly like how you worked your opinion about the process into this without being judgmental or overly supportive. You kept it very objective and still managed to relate it to you, personally. That being said, I think you did a good job of relating the first two steps to your experience, but maybe you could highlight the third step somewhere in your response as well.

While reading Anne Lamott's,Shitty First Drafts, I used the three-read process and felt it was really effective. By first skimming through the text, I got the feel of what the material was going to be about. This step let me know what to expect when I was going to officially read it. For example, by first skimming, I assumed the text was about writing papers and how the first drafts are always terrible. Then by actually reading the material steadily, I got to settle into the text and grasp the main ideas and the context the author is writing. Next, I reread it and started writing notes and felt actually made me pay attention to the main ideas and pull out the most important points made. I feel like this critical reading process will help me in the future when I'm reading because I usually speed read through texts and don't get what I should from it but with this process I feel I can finally read effectively.

    1. You covered the three read process very well. the only thing I would have left out is when you say that it was "really effective" (DeGraffe). Other than that you covered all three parts and I really think you nailed this blog.

  13. The three-read process seemed rather familiar after we got into the meat of it during class. After some thought, I remember being taught to interact with whatever text I might be reading. However the skimming and reacting portions I had not learned. Adding these two steps in actually increased my ability to process the Lamott essay and react with it beyond taking notes on the side and answering questions. It helped me to connect with the text on a more personal level and to really insert myself into the audience to which it speaks. No doubt this is an essential part of critical thinking and analyzing. The three-read process is a technique I feel confident will not only help me to understand what I am reading, but also to pick it apart, and think about it on a whole new level.

    1. Rachel,

You did a well summarizing the Lamott text. You were not judging the text or persuading anyone to use it or not to use it. You did a great job telling us how the text helped you and how you fell it will help you again. Good Job.

  14. I found the Anne Lamott’s three-read process to be very helpful. Lamott helps me to understand how to read and break down a lengthy article; I can taste it, eat it and digest it. I taste articles by skimming for key words. It helps with getting an idea of what the text may be about and I can use my imagination. When I am reading an article that does not interest me, I skim. I now understand that skimming actually helps me when I am reading an article. After skimming and finding key words that stand out to me, I become more motivated to read the article. Then I eat the article, which is reading the article. This process helps with identifying the main idea and allowing me to break down the text and process what I have read. After reading the article, I can use my critical thinking and analyze everything I have digested. Digesting the article gives me time to marinate on the article. I can form my opinion and figure out what the author is trying to relay to his or her audience. New writers should give the Anne Lamott three-read process a try, just to see if it can help them when developing their writing skills.

    1. I loved your analogy of the three read process, taste, eat and digest. I can certainly see how it would help pique interest in the reading. I also believe that, for me, this also helps when I really don't like the article. Having a format to rely on when it is not interesting helps me get through all of it without missing important information. Good job!

    Three Read Process
The three read process is a perfect example of how repetition can improve understanding. Using the three read process is simple and can make intimidating text easier to get a handle on. Skimming the text allows the reader to get a feel for the author’s main points and writing style, and allow the reader to identify difficult vocabulary early on rather than getting stuck with an obscure term. Going over the text in detail will allow for the opportunity get every drop of information and reinforce anything that stuck out during the first step of the process. Finally, allowing the information to ‘digest’ will cause the reader to reflect on the relevant facts and consider the emotional and academic impacts the author evoked, and encourage critical review of the author’s goals and intentions when they put ink to paper.
In my personal experience, repeating the process more than once on the same text causes the results to grow even more. Every aspect of the exercise is designed to make the reading material more personal and available to even the student that struggles with every article they read. There is no doubt that the three read process exemplifies the old adage, ‘practice makes perfect.’

  16. Experience of three read process.

I found the three read process very useful due to the ability to be very versatile. Often there are many different reasons to be reading and analyzing a text. A reader could be reading for a general idea, for getting a more in depth opinion, or for a detailed analysis. This process could be used for most situations.
When reading for pleasure often a person needs only know the general idea. In such a case a person could do only the first step to get the general gist of the writing. As well, if a person only needed to know a general idea without taking the time to read in depth the first step is all that would be needed. When more time is allowed or a more in depth analysis is desired then the first and second step could be employed. For instance in order to form an opinion of the content often a second reading is needed to gather specific examples. Finally, when plenty of time is allowed or a response to content is required all three steps could be employed.
In summary the three read process is a versatile tool for reading. This tool will be very useful in most of my academic readings.

  17. The Three-read process was beneficial to reading longer papers rather than short ones. It can be very helpful when reading long essays in a short amount of time. The process is a waste of time when you can simply write notes when reading and recollect what you wrote down when done. The first step is always helpful in long texts so you can get the gist and better understand it when you fully read it. That way it makes more sense in the process of reading the paper. The other steps you will do anyway because unconsciously we already analyse the text as we read it and then summarize it when we finish.
