Practice Reflection

Directions: Choose two topics that you would like to reflect on for the semester. Follow the same guidelines as the previous reflection, except this time you will turn completely inward. Each topic should be relatively fleshed out and should be focused.

Example: This semester has been helpful for me in many ways, but the aspect I have benefited from the most would be the in-class peer-reviews and one-on-ones with the professor. The peer-reviews allowed me to see what my classmates were doing, and also allowed me to see things about my writing that I would not have seen, otherwise. When discussing my paper with Ms. Taylor, I was able to get more specific feedback, and some insight into what she might mark me on if I did not make changes to my paper.

The reflection should be no more than 200 words. You can print it out and bring it in to class with you on the day of the final.

Due before class on July 30th.

  1. This summer semester has been beneficial to my academic writing in a myriad of ways. However, the most enlightening aspects of the class to me were the teacher feedback and the in-class workshops. The teacher feedback enabled me to really see what needed improvement in my papers as a whole and what I need to focus on as a writer. The in-class workshops allowed me to observe others thought process's, along with see what type of thesis really resonates with my classroom audience. Both of these really helped me gain insight and grow as a writer.

  2. This semester had many tools to help me grow as a writer; two things that specifically helped me in this class were the one-on-ones with the professor and the comments made on my papers. I have always seen myself as a writer but tend to fluff a lot in my papers. The one-on-ones and comments made sure to keep me on track. The one-on-ones helped me to scan my papers and fix what needed to be fixed with my writing. The comments on my final papers were helpful to my editing. Going into this class I would never edit my papers and I would get away with it. Fortunately, Ms. Taylor could see through this and push me to be a better writer. I have gotten knocked down a few pegs at times with my ego, but I appreciate the outcome.

  3. When starting college I purposely put my ENG 121 and ENG 122 right at the front. I did not think that either of them would be very beneficial to me and I would come away with just about as much recycled English lessons rattling around my head as were regurgitated to me in high school. However, I did learn a few things while taking this class, or at least refined the things I already knew. The two elements of the class that I have found the most useful are the peer reviews and the thesis workshop. The main thing I learned from both of these activities was that I like feedback from others. When starting this class I thought that working by yourself was always better. I now know that getting feedback from others can be helpful and mean the difference between a bad paper and a good paper. Before this class I knew I could write a good thesis and a good paper. Since, we began while conducting the peer review and thesis workshop sessions I have learned that other people have good things to say and can help me improve and fine tune my papers and thesis.

  4. This semester had many tools to help me with my assignments. The main thing that really help me in this class is doing one-on-one with the teacher Ms.Taylor. She really was up front with my work she never sugar coated anything when it came too my work. If I have to take English again with Ms.Taylor I will do it. Ms. Taylor is a honest teacher and that's what I like about her as a teacher. I appreciate the time and effort you put in for the class.

  5. The topics I have chosen to write about for my reflective final in English 121 are “How to research a paper properly”or “How to technically dissect an academic article to get the most out of what the writer is saying”.

  6. I was introduced to many different resources and techniques to use within my writing this semester. The two that have been most beneficial to my learning experience are the writing center and blog assignments. I’m always hesitant to let other people read my work, and they both helped me get over that hesitation. It was extremely helpful having someone from the writing lab look over my work for mistakes before turning it in. This allowed me to make necessary corrections so that my final grade was reflective of the best work that I was able to produce. The blog assignments not only offered helpful feedback from classmates, but they also helped me develop ideas for my paper so that my information was more thorough and organized. The writing lab and blog assignments noticeably enhanced my ability to produce a more solid paper and will definitely be utilized throughout the rest of my education.

  7. Throughout the semester, I have had difficulties with breaking out of a single train of thought. Being blinded by one opinion has limited my writing by making for weakly supported arguments. The in class discussions with my peers has greatly influenced my ability to support my ideas by giving me a chance to experience other points of view. My peers ideas and opinions, whether complimentary to my own or not, have helped me to define my ideas more effectively, rethink errors in my logic, or even re-evaluate how I feel about a particular subject. Their feedback has greatly improved my writing.

  8. Over this semester in my English 121 class, I have enjoyed and benefitted from the peer reviews and the teacher feedback. This has helped me understand my style of writing by reading other peoples writing and has helped me understand what I am doing wrong that I may not have seen; I also enjoyed reading my peers writing because I like to see what kind of writers they are in comparison to me and my writing. Having that one on one time with Ms. Taylor was beneficial because it helped me see where I was at as far as my writing, what I needed to correct in order to receive a better grade. I believe this was a great way in her part of getting involved and helping us achieve to get a better grade.

  9. Although I’ve taken ENG 121 once before, this semester has been far more helpful for many reasons, but mostly due to the thesis workshops, and grademark tool. The thesis workshops gave me much needed reassurance that my papers were headed in the right direction, and that one of the most important aspects of my paper was well written and adequate. I only wish the workshop went further into evaluating the content of the thesis, instead of focusing mainly on the mechanics. The grademark tool absolutely gave me more feedback on my papers than I've ever had, and let me know the specific areas of my paper that were weak, which I highly appreciated.

  10. I have grown as a writer over this summer for many reasons. The underlying cause to all of the growth has been the very high grading standards of the class. I came into this semester thinking that I allready knew enough to get an A in an english class. It was not until I failed to get A's on my papers that I began to re-evaluate this assumption. Once I realised that I couldnt earn an A with my current knowledge, I began to reach out and seek knowledge. It was only then that I began to truley learn and objectively evauate my writing. The result of this new knowledge was a 6 point jump above my average grades on paper. As well as a huge increase in coherence, and quality of my writing.

  11. Over this semester I have become more confident when writing English papers. I was so intimidated by the “college experience” when I started school this semester. During high school I was not the best writer but now I feel that I have improved my writing skills because I took advantage of the resources offered to me such as the Writing Lab and my CCR teacher. I am grateful for those two resources for taking time out to look over my papers and help improve my writing skills. By showing me where my punctuations should be and how I can improve my thesis really helped me to understand what Ms. Taylor was looking for when grading our papers and I noticed an increase in my grades.

  12. Projectile vomit comes to mind when I want to try and sum up this semester of schooling for me. The reading brings vomit up from just try to wrap my head around; the idea of outdated source to try and provoke a response only had me arguing back and forth with myself. One point I was screaming, latterly screaming at the Anzualduz writing. Even the blog which is meant to inspire and make me provoke a creative side, every time I tried to offer some nugget of truth its shot down or never posted due to internet problems. Secondly is the writing, taking one of the only things I love and turning it into a mundane activity to justify my ability to write and make something good. From summary’s to fucking APA papers I am fuming wanting to burn most of my written work now. But despite all the crap there was some nuggets of truth that I learned. From rereading myself and reading out loud and relying less on myself for good steady work as it looks good in my head but overall sucks being put on paper. I am just upset with school. Get me out of here.

  13. During the course of English 121, I have learned a few things that might stick into my mind. Two things I have learned are ethos, pathos, and logos, and in-class peer-reviews. Maybe next time when I write a paper, ethos, pathos, and logos might make me think about how to convince my audience. The peer-reviews helped me saw what was wrong to my papers, and try not to do the same mistake again.
